Montreal's F1 race dropped from season | Tuesday, October 7th, 2008

Just what we need - more bad news about the economy. Montreal depends on these events and festivals to generate huge windfalls. Losses like these pile up. If our NeoCon, right-wing government continues with their Draconian cuts to arts and culture, you can bet that Montreal - one of the most culturally vibrant cities in the world - will feel the hardest crunch in Canada.

The Canadian Grand Prix has been dropped from the 2009 Formula One calendar and replaced with the inaugural race in Abu Dhabi. The International Automobile Federation (FIA) issued a revised calendar with Turkey moving from August to 7 June to allow a summer break for the teams. There will be no North American round after the US Grand Prix at Indianapolis was dropped this year.

Ummm, Abu fucking Dhabi? Are you serious? I guess croony sponsorships by shady royals who want to entertain themselves counts for more than a quarter-million passionate fans.
