Steven is a well-known expert on cyberinfrastructure, cyberactivism, Internet privacy policy, and knowledge transfer on the web. He serves in an advisory role on several global, national and local web initiatives - notably, the World Academy of Young Scientists, the Mother-Child Health International Research Network, the Strategic Training Initiative in Research in Reproductive Health Sciences , the Better Broadband Toolkit, and many others. Steven is also on the board of Catalytic Communities, a project manager at Acorn Active Media - an employee-run tech collective - and an advisor to The Ethos Group.

After founding and managing a wireless security and auditing company in 2002, securing 802.11 networks for firms such as l'Oréal and Delft Blue, Steven established the Strict Machine Foundation, to provide training, support and general mischief to medical groups, scientists, non-profits, academia and community groups in developing countries and in underserved communities in Canada - helping implement fun things like open-ended virtual communities, rich media distribution, citizen journalism, and intelligent information architecture in ways that make sense to human beings. Steven is currently striving to put together an international federation of non-profits, NGOs and progressive-minded small companies to help address a growing need for low-cost, high-quality web services in the grassroots and charity sectors.

Much of Steven's work is related to Latin America at the moment; he's currently involved in a number of projects to promote social mobility through ICT development throughout the Republic of Cuba and elsewhere in Latin America. You may also be interested in reading his Cuba blog.

Steven is also a prolific photographer and experienced wedding photographer, and can often be spotted in the wild snapping shots of Montreal's street scene with his Hasselblad 500 on the weekdays, or shooting pics at a [most likely Portuguese] wedding on the weekends.

In addition to film and digital photography, he enjoys rotary-wing aircraft, boxing, downhill mountain biking, long-distance running, PC and console gaming, cooking, and eating.

Steven currently resides near Montreal, Quebec.
